There have been few more depressing moments in my life than the rush for left-leaning Human Rights organisations to provide justifications for why it was okay to steamroll over fundamental protections in the context of mRNA treatments. As someone who leans left myself, this has left me quite stranded on the last island of Kantian ethics still standing now that the tide is coming back in.

Kant is dead and Bentham is king. How rights enthusiasts became Benthamite, when Bentham himself despised rights, is a fascinating history waiting to be written.

The influence of Mill on US political thinking is surely part of this story. And perhaps also the hollowing out of Kant by Rawls, which in the UK we have tended not to notice but which set the scene for all manner of odd political manoeuvres.
